Sustainable development in emerging economies.

We’re going to put ourselves out of a job.

The past decades have been defined by undeniable progress in nearly every area of life. However, not everyone has seen the benefits of these steps forward. That’s where we come in. At Marea Foundation, we are putting ourselves out of a job by helping transform communities seemingly left behind as the world races ahead.

These communities are not poor, disadvantaged, or incompetent. They do not need our pity, just a little help. Marea Foundation enters project sites with an exit plan in mind: our purpose is to break poverty and dependency cycles, not perpetuate them. To do this, we focus on three major areas: women’s empowerment, small business incubation, and healthcare.

Women’s Empowerment

In 2018, women made up 49.58% of the world population, yet earned only 37% of global GDP. Although wage gaps are closing, the fact that they exist at all is abysmal. No one should receive less compensation for their effort or have fewer opportunities to contribute to their economic well-being simply based on gender. Click to find out more about how we’re helping give women equal footing in a male-centric economic culture.

Small Business Incubation

The current economic climate has made it harder than ever for small businesses to make it. Our Small Business Incubation team works with locals to capitalize on resources in a holistically sustainable manner. We know that each business is different and we alter our approach to fit each business’s specific needs to ensure the best possible chance of success.

Healthcare

Healthcare happens within the context of a larger community and culture. Our approach extends beyond the clinic to help ensure people get the best possible care - physically, mentally, and spiritually - so that they can live the best possible lives.

Our location

Located in the Northeast of Honduras on the coast of the Caribbean is the large state of Colon and Trujillo is one of it’s cities.

Colon is the Spanish word for Columbus and on his last voyage in 1504, Christopher Columbus landed in what is now Trujillo Bay.

In Colon there are beautiful beaches and the ports where all of the bananas get shipped of along with banana plantations.

There is a lot of potential for economic development in Colon and this is why we have decided to plant our flag there. We are helping the people of Honduras find their way into economic prosperity and sustainability, through our various programs.
