Chess Classes
Paul, who played chess in high school, decided to see if there was any interest in the community for young children to learn the game. His belief is that chess teaches strategic thinking, planning ahead, and playing a long game. Coupled with learning basic business skills, his belief is that mastering chess can be part of learning life skills for youngsters that they otherwise would not have the opportunity to learn.
His chess club started in a private home with 2 young boys. Before long, the number of children grew dramatically and a new location was needed. Marea Foundation refurbished a meeting hall to serve as a chess club facility, and received donations of 10 more chess sets.
By the time Paul left to return to Palm Beach Atlantic University, the chess club had over 30 children attending regularly and enjoying the game.
The chess club continues to generate tremendous interest among the children of Trujillo, but now we are in desperate need of chess teachers and coaches to assist with the program.
