Girls soccer field and racing
Driving around Honduras, I get the feeling that small, neighborhood football (soccer) fields outnumber churches and schools combined. Football seems to be the center of activity in most Honduran towns, and the fields are in constant use. Football could be called the real religion of Honduras.
A few fields are green and manicured, but those are the exception. Most are dirt, pebble-strewn fields with goals made from local tree branches.
In Trujillo, in the neighborhood of Monte Cristo, there is a nice field that is the home of the local girls football league. This field is where the girls teams play several times a week, and it is mostly reserved for tournaments, with girls teams coming from as far away as La Ceiba.
We got to be friends with Olvin, who runs the league, and realized that the field could much better serve its community purpose if it were able to be lit at night.
So Marea Foundation, together with Fundacion Marea, undertook fundraising to buy and install field lighting for the girls football league field.
We partnered with a Honduran car racing club, Colon Racing and president and founder Denis Gevawer, to sponsor a drag race event at the Trujillo airstrip. The event was a huge success, and we raised enough money to purchase and install the wooden posts for the lights.
Now we just need to run the wiring from the nearest transformer, and buy and install the lights.
While we will be sponsoring another racing event with Colon Racing later this year, we’d like to see if we can raise enough to finish the job sooner.
Running wire to the field and lights will cost $3000.
There will be 8 light fixtures, to get installed, costs $2900,.
The league and the town will contribute the labor to run the wiring, and install the light fixtures. The town will pay the electric bill for the lights.
So we are accepting donations now in order to fund the wiring and purchase of the light fixtures in order to finish the job and provide a lighted field so the girls league can also play in the evenings.
